Welcome to Like a Local, our travel series where writers share how to spend an ideal weekend in their favorite hometowns. This time, Jenny shares her go-to itinerary for a weekend in Austin, TX.
Live music, breakfast tacos, BBQ, Keep Austin Weird—these are all synonymous with Austin. While that’s true, I've learned that the real magic of the city lies just beyond the well-worn tourist paths.
I've called Austin home for over 15 years, witnessing its transformation from a quirky, laid-back city to a bustling tech hub that still guards its unique character. I’m the friend everyone texts for “the real spots” when they visit. I've discovered the hidden gems by asking long-standing Austinites and sometimes just by wandering. These are the places I return to again and again, and the ones I send my favorite people to when they want to experience the real Austin. If you want to see Austin the way locals do, this is the weekend I’d plan for you.
Where to Stay
If you’re looking for a place that’s as memorable as the city itself, book a night at The Bloomhouse. This architectural wonder tucked away in the hills of West Austin was designed with no straight lines and inspired by natural forms. The residence truly looks like something out of an enchanted forest. The house is secluded enough to feel like your own secret hideaway, but close enough that you can get downtown in 15 minutes.
Family & Pet Note: The Bloomhouse is best for couples or small groups, and while it’s not set up for pets, kids will love the storybook vibe.
Boutique charm and neighborhood living, Austin excels in boutique hotels, each offering a distinct personality. Tucked just off South Congress, the Frame Hotel is the kind of spot that feels both central and hidden, like an oasis in the city. The rooms are beautifully designed with calming natural materials, spa-like bathrooms, and private lanais that make it easy to unwind after a day out. I love how check-in is seamless (no front desk, just a quick digital portal), so you can get straight to relaxing or exploring. Whether you’re here for the music, the food, or just a change of scenery, this hotel is that rare find: peaceful, thoughtfully designed, and right in the middle of everything you want to see and do.

Family & Pet Note: The hotel is walkable to many shops, parks, and kid-friendly restaurants. Cribs and extra bedding are available upon request. Your pets are also welcome with advance notice. They’ll feel right at home with complimentary pet treats and water bowls at check-in.
Where to Eat & Drink

Imagine a charming, historic house, gracefully tucked under a canopy of ancient oak trees in South Austin. This is Ani's Day & Night, a place where laid-back Austin vibes meet vibrant community spirit, creating an atmosphere that makes every visit truly special. Once inside, you're immediately struck by the thoughtful attention to detail and the loving preservation of what was once the home of Aniceta Limon, the grandmother of the owner. Her spirit of hospitality and entrepreneurial zeal truly lives on here. By day, this airy space transforms into a bright, welcoming coffee shop with ample room for focused remote work or casual meet-ups. As the sun sets, Ani's gracefully shifts, offering thoughtfully sourced natural wines and craft beers on tap. The sprawling outdoor patio frequently hosts a rotation of food trucks, serving up everything from gourmet tacos to international delights.

Family & Pet Note: Ani’s is incredibly kid- and dog-friendly! Spacious patio room for little ones to roam safely, and you’ll often find water bowls set out for thirsty pups, making it a perfect stop for the whole family.

When that craving for a classic, no-nonsense, incredibly satisfying sandwich hits, I head straight to Little Deli & Pizzeria in the quiet, charming Crestview neighborhood. This place feels like a throwback to simpler times with red-checkered tablecloths, a friendly staff who remembers your name, and a menu full of sandwiches, fresh, hearty salads, and pizzas with the right amount of chewy crispiness. The ingredients are consistently fresh, the service is always friendly, and there’s a wonderful, nostalgic neighborhood feel that transports you away from Austin’s hustle. No wonder this place is a beloved destination for locals.

Family & Pet Note: This is a great spot for families and dogs, especially on sunny afternoons.

Other spots to consider:
What to Do
Located about 45 minutes west of downtown, this preserve features a lush limestone canyon and guided tours that take you past waterfalls, caves, and ancient cypress trees.
Book a tour in advance, as tour groups are intentionally kept small to maintain the tranquility of the space.
Wear comfortable shoes suitable for light hiking, and be prepared for varied terrain. It's an ideal morning activity before the Texas heat fully kicks in.
Family & Pet Note: The guided tours are great for kids who like a little adventure, but the trails are best for sturdy walkers (no strollers). Be sure to make plans for your dogs as the outdoor preserve does not allow pets.

Nestled in the eclectic North Loop neighborhood, this independent bookstore is one of those rare places that instantly makes you feel welcomed. Housed in a former post office, it maintains a lively warmth and community-first spirit. More than just a place to buy books, this cornerstone hub regularly hosts engaging author events, vibrant book clubs, and pop-up markets. Whether you’re looking for your next favorite read or a cozy spot to relax, this shop is a must-visit. It’s the kind of place where you can truly slow down and feel at home, even if you’re just passing through.

Family & Pet Note: There’s a sweet kids’ section and plenty of space to curl up with a picture book. Pets are welcome on the spacious patio with a decent amount of shade.
